CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The thrill was increasing. It was more intense, heart-pounding, with every life the eye took. One at a time, he was ridding the world of the dark, deceptive liars that populated it.

His hands had been totally steady at the scene. He had knotted the rope with vicious intent, tugging it as tight as it would go. Hesitation hadn’t even been a possibility, and he’d drawn the sketch of the eye with unerring accuracy and an artistic flourish.

Only now, as he moved the photo of Callahan from one side of the corkboard to the other, were they trembling with excitement.

"Look at you," he breathed. "Look at you, you liar. You thought you could cover your tracks and get away with what you'd done. How wrong you were. Now there'll be no more of that behavior and no more of the lying."

The man’s photo stared at him, his own eyes cool under that expensively highlighted coiffure. It was easier to look at him now he was dead. When that liar was alive, a surge of hatred had welled within him as he’d stared at the high quality print, while planning his fate. It had been a difficult emotion to control. He thought of it as an inky blackness that, once dropped into clear water, sullied it all. That was how it had felt.

Now that he was gone, the eye’s emotions felt pure and clear. There wasn’t a trace of that dark, inky pollution. It was gone, and his mind was peaceful and tranquil once more.

But he knew that in time, the anger would surge again. As soon as he started to study the other photos in his collection, emotions would start to take hold. Then, the desire would bloom inside him again, that desire to destroy. The implacable urge to bring justice to those who had so cunningly avoided it.

“Well, you won’t be lying or cheating again, but you need more company,” he said softly.

He turned to his computer, and logged in on the dark web.

Using an alias, there were a few chat sites that he frequented, where the conversation was all about revenge, and consequences. Conversing with like minded people fed his soul, even though he knew that it was vitally important to stay anonymous, and that if he made a mistake, they might track him.

He always made sure to use his own private, encrypted VPN when he went online. He didn’t think there was any link between his real name and the names he used. And he didn’t go online too often.

But now, he couldn’t resist spending a few minutes in conversation.

“Isn’t it a good feeling when people’s actions lead them to their downfall?” he typed, grinning as he wrote the message.

“What do you mean by that?” one of his contacts replied, almost instantly, because he was online too. Or she. This site was strictly anonymous, although there were others more public, where his friends were less cautious about revealing their identities. He used those, under other aliases. He wasn’t always as careful about what he wrote in the public domain.
